      • The stock Gibson 500T screamed out with high output and resulted in heavy bottom end tone. What was missing was the sense of dynamics and clarity and a smooth lively “punch”. Part of what made Edward’s tone on the early Van Halen albums so great was the fact that the overdrive was gotten from his aggressive attack on the strings – the ...

      • I have purchased a bunch of Seymour Duncan humbuckers over the years, and the '78 Model is my latest purchase and thus far is my favorite pickup EVER! The tone is to die for, and it makes my Bray 4550 Deluxe plexi style amp sing! Harmonics really jump out of this pickup, and it cleans up very nicely when I roll the volume down.
      • The first part of his post reads: "Which Dimarzio bridge humbucker compares to the bridge humbucker in a Gibson SG Standard". This indicates that he doesn't want a gibson pickup, he wants a pickup that sounds like one. In this case a Seymour Duncan will be the closest match.
      • Jan 17, 2017 · I've tried the Pearly Gates, Duncan Distortion, '59, and a Duncan custom shop pickup as well. Nothing sounds mind blowing so far. My gut is to try a Super Distortion for the hell of it. When I swapped out the pickups the first time I wired it up with 500K pots and that didn't even help.

      • Mar 31, 2012 · The Super Distortion are super clean when you set the volume to half-way but when you want to solo and you crank the volume to full, you get a raw funky sound with great sustain. I admit the sound is a bit dirtier and less clean than Seymour Duncan but they have more gain, more output and more bite over-all.

      • I hear that these 2 pickups sound kind of similar, but that the SD has more midrange focus than the 500T. Anyone have experience with these 2 pickups?
      • The 500T is close to a Duncan Distortion. There's plenty of vids on youtube comparing JB to Distortion that will give you an idea of the difference between the two. It has sorta harsh upper mids, retains more attack and presence/highs. It's great for thrash as it stays very defined. The JB is smoother and better for classic rock.

      • I have not played a super distortion p/u though. I replaced the 500T in my Gibson with a Duncan Dimebucker because (obviously) I wanted more heat. The Dimebucker is pretty hot, but I like the 500T way better in that combo of mahog neck/body and maple top. As a metal guy I can say that the 500T really delivers when you want crispy.
